Nap Prevention

It's getting more and more difficult to get Miriam down for her nap these days. Last week, she didn't nap 2 days in a row and this week, it has taken nearly an hour each day for her to finally fall asleep. Once she's asleep, she's sleeping for THREE HOURS, which is wonderful. She's got a lot of tactics to put it off though...

Today, I read 3 books, sang her 'Go to Sleep' song that Paul made up and played on the floor with her for 15 minutes before I actually put her in the crib. I went in there after about 30 minutes, angry because she's got to sleep today b/c of dinner plans tonight. I asked her, "Miriam, what is the problem? What do you want?" She replied, very whiny, "I want to go to the store and buy something." I just shook my head, pitying Paul, and walked out.

Tuesday, she was talking to herself for about 45 minutes, really sweetly, no crying or whining...talking about polar bears (which are the same as monsters or a Growly Gus to her) and telling her imaginary friend not to be afraid. I listened for a minute at the door and heard her say, "Is OK Wiggles, don't be skeered. Polar bears aren't weel. Wiggles you so silly. Silly Wiggles." Curious who "Wiggles" was, I opened the door. Miriam was sitting straight up with her legs out in front of her. "Wiggles" it turns out are her toes. Each set of toes talk (move and wiggle) to one another when she is avoiding her nap.

She got this really cute cork board from David and Rachel at Christmas and it's above her crib now. The push pins are painted wooden bumblebees. She talks to those, too, a lot. Lots of buzzing coming from her room when she is putting off napping.

Thankfully, when she naps, she NAPS. I can only imagine what her dreams are like, given what she thinks up when she's wide awake.
